A 23-year-old Poway man was pronounced dead at El Centro Regional Medical Center on Sunday after he crashed his motorcycle while off-roading near Plaster City in the eastern Imperial Valley desert.

Matthew Steven Spiewak was off-roading with friends Sunday morning when the accident occurred, said county Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes.

After the crash, Spiewak complained of shortness of breath and friends called for an ambulance.

Friends then started to drive him toward the roadway where an ambulance could meet them. That's when Spiewak stopped breathing and his friends tried to resuscitate him.

The responding ambulance crew continued to give him cardio pulmonary resuscitation as they drove toward El Centro Regional Medical Center.

Medical staff at the hospital tried to save Spiewak, but was pronounced dead at 10:49 a.m.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy scheduled for Tuesday, Hayes said.
