Sudduth leads Wildcats to victory at tournament

Whether it's competing in big championship matches or in season-opening tournaments, Brawley Union High School's Leighan Sudduth always seems at the top of her game.

She proved herself again over the weekend as she led Brawley to first place in the Madison High School tournament in San Diego, where she earned tournament MVP honors.

With Sudduth pacing the Wildcats, Brawley swept through three matches, winning each match three sets to zero.

While Brawley won in impressive fashion, Sudduth didn't think it was much of an accomplishment.

"The competition wasn't very good. To me it was more of a good practice for us," said the 17-year-old senior. "We were able to get all the bugs out and I think now we know what we can and can't do."

While Sudduth did much of her damage as the team's setter, in the team's first match against Mission Bay she finished with 18 points, including 11 in the first game.

Already having established herself as a top-notch volleyball player, what Sudduth also is bringing to the Wildcats is leadership by example. She helped teammates Kristen Colace and Kaylin Rubin earn spots on the tournament's first team.

"I was very impressed with the way the entire team played. Both Kaylin and Kristen played great," said Sudduth, a team captain. "I think Kristen kind of surprised me. I mean, I knew she had it in her, but she really stepped it up and just played really well."

While Sudduth was complimentary about her teammates, she was a bit more critical about herself. Being the competitor, Sudduth thinks there is always room for improvement.

"I really didn't play as good as I would've liked to. But that's just me. I'm never satisfied. I always feel that I can do better," said Sudduth. "But the team's looking good and that's all that matters. We're improving every week and right now. We're right on track and right where we need to be."
