BRAWLEY — The board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Commission here have decided to hire separate executive directors.

The former acting executive director for both agencies, Nicole Gilles has been named executive director of the chamber while applications are being accepted for the Economic Development Commission position.

"It's great. I love this job and I love the board that I work with. I also have a great group of staff workers I work with," said Gilles.

The chamber board decided Tuesday to hire Gilles.

She was named acting executive director for both agencies in June after the resignation of Cindy Stillman, who also had been running both agencies.

Gilles was the membership services director for the chamber at the time. She was placed on a 90-day evaluation period following her appointment.

"We think we can do a better job by dividing the two positions," said board president Stephen Watte.

"We'll work much more efficiently that way," he added.

Said Watte of Gilles, "She's very conscientious and I think she'll do a good job. I would not have appointed her if I didn't think she could."

Gilles said of taking on the position full-time, "I think this job is always challenging but it hasn't been any more difficult than normal. Every day is a new challenge and I think things are running smoothly and according to plan."

"I would like to implement new programs for members and I'm currently in the process of reviewing current programs to improve them," she said.

She said she wants to be involved with more legislative issues.

Gilles will remain acting executive director for the Economic Development Commission until someone is hired.

Applications are already being accepted. The deadline is Sept. 15.

Watte said an interview committee is screening and pre-qualifying applicants and will start calling some for interviews after the deadline.
