50 years ago — "This September has been the best September for our business in 10 years." That and similar statements from other officials in El Centro stores and banks reflected the economic conditions of the Valley.

40 years ago — Annual reports of high school and elementary school districts in El Centro reveal students there are either equal to or above national average in achievement scores. Only in seventh-grade spelling were test scores below national norms.

30 years ago — Jews all over the world as well as here in the Imperial Valley begin the celebration of the highest of Holy Days, Yom Kippur. Dr., Seymour Applebaum will officiate in these ceremonies at Congregation Beth Jacob.

20 years ago — Mexican Independence Day activities ranging from royalty to mariachis were kicked off today in Calexico while in Mexicali, about 25,000 people, including Arizona Gov. Bruce E. Babbitt, attended festivities Tuesday night.
