Voice: Support our troops, but consider how they are compensated

September 16, 2001

As a retired Navy man and father of a soldier, it is great to see all the patriotism. But while you buy flags to put on the front of your three-bedroom, two-bath house, the servicemen and women live in substandard housing.

In Germany many don't even have screens on their windows.

While you drive to the rally the service wife drives to get her food stamps for the month. She can't afford the gas to go to the rally and go to the welfare office both.

When you drive around and honk at a sign saying an "Eye for an Eye," who do expect to take that eye?

When you go to the soccer game and wave the flag, what would you tell the 4-year-old son who is upset because he can't go to his soccer game? In his words, "I can't go because my daddy has to guard the helicopters so nobody takes them." You see, they can only afford one 1987 Volkswagen.

Support your military. Call on your representatives to bring pay, housing and living conditions up to standard. Write a letter to any serviceman and say thanks and maybe put in five bucks.
