BRAWLEY — A 2-year-old girl sustained major head injuries Tuesday when the car in which she was traveling overturned, ejecting her onto Highway 78 east of here.

The accident occurred as Barbara Matkin, 25, of Tooele, Utah, and her daughter were traveling west on 78 near Butters Road about 7 p.m.

According to a California Highway Patrol press release, Matkin lost control of her car, which drifted onto the north dirt shoulder, then skidded across the roadway and overturned on the south dirt shoulder.

As the car rolled, the 2-year-old girl, who was in a child safety seat, was ejected.

Still, Highway Patrol officials said the child seat the girl was in was not used properly but did not have any further information.

Both the girl, whose identity was not released, and Matkin were taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley where Matkin was treated for abrasions.

The girl was flown to Children's Hospital in San Diego, according to Pioneers staffers.

There was no information this morning on her condition.
