Red Cross warns of bogus solicitors

September 19, 2001

The American Red Cross has been made aware there may be some people fraudulently acting as authorized donor solicitors for the American Red Cross for the purpose of soliciting, collecting or receiving money or material for their own personal gain.

To ensure that all donations appropriately make their way to the American Red Cross and are properly acknowledged for tax purposes, the American Red Cross would like to have the establishments, businesses and schools advise it of donation collections. This will offer the donating public assurance that those collecting funds on the Red Cross' behalf will be held to the high standards of stewardship the public expects from the American Red Cross.

Federal statues prohibit the use of the name and emblem of the Red Cross by commercial concerns and unauthorized solicitations.
