Voice: Teen shocked by attacks, confident Americans will pull together

September 19, 2001

As an 18-year-old, I am very shocked and still somewhat in disbelief of last Tuesday's horrific tragedy.

It is amazing to know that people have put aside their differences and come together as a nation in this time of need.

But why did it take something like this for that? Why is it now that people are being kind to each other when before they weren't? Why is it that something as bad as this is making people go buy flags and show their patriotism? Why wasn't anyone doing this before?

As a teen-ager I have never

seen anything this horrible or felt the pain that I felt for the families that lost brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, husbands and wives, but even worse for those children who have lost their mothers and their fathers.

What would make a person do something as horrible as this? Speaking for myself I have never seen anything like this in my lifetime and I have never

felt so much pain for my country. This horrible tragedy will go down in history and none of us will ever forget it. It has changed everyone's lives in a different way.

I think people take life for granted and we shouldn't. This has changed my outlook on life and many other things.

As Lee Greenwood once sang "I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free, and I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me, and I gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today, cuz there ain't no

doubt I love this land, God bless the USA."

No matter what happens, the

entire nation will come together and in the end we will still be united and have the freedom that we have now. We need to hold our loved ones close and

every day when they walk out of the door no matter who it is, make sure you tell them you love them, because you never know what could happen by the end of the day.
