50 years ago — Some El Centro kids will be better off this year because of Kiwanis Club members. Kiwanians took lessons from newsboys who work for the Post-Press and went out to sell newspapers.

40 years ago — Fifty leaders of the Imperial Valley cotton industry met in the Planters Hotel in Brawley to hear a plea for voluntary contributions for a research and promotion program to offset tremendous marketing strides made by makers of synthetic materials.

30 years ago — An El Centro ordinance forbids shooting guns within the city limits and police say it's wrong to interfere with an officer making an arrest. Two brothers were arrested Saturday evening, charged with those two offenses.

20 years ago — Only 24 hours after a fire destroyed most of Aurora Continuation High School in Calexico, a second fire caused extensive damage to a nearby house. A fire of unknown origin destroyed the roof and part of the structure of a house that has been remodeled into two apartments at 917 Rockwood Ave. on Saturday.
