Eagles kick off IVL with win over Bulldogs

CALEXICO — The Southwest High School girls tennis team had little trouble disposing of Calexico High, winning 16-2 in both teams' Imperial Valley League opener here Monday.

Leading Southwest were its doubles teams, which gave up only three games in the match.

The No. 1 doubles team for the Eagles, Breezy Boniface and Kristina Estrada, defeated Calexico's No. 1 team of Tara and Tori Finley 6-1, and downed both the No. 2 squad of Arlene Madrigal and Angelica Ramirez and No. 3 pair of Roxanna Zamaripa and Julie Lizarraga 6-0.

Monnette De La Torre and Kim Slovak, the No. 2 duo for Southwest, swept all three sets 6-0.

The Eagles' No. 3 duo of Karelisa Jones and Becky Leone blanked Madrigal/Ramirez 6-0 and downed Finley/Finley and Zamarripa/Lizarraga both 6-1.

In singles, the No. 1 for Southwest, Judy Hsu, defeated the Bulldogs' No. 1 Erica Rincon 7-6 (8-6), No. 2 Letty Cota 6-1 and No. 3 Adrianna Urbina 6-0.


Bianca Bonilla, the Eagles' No. 2, downed Rincon 6-2 and shut out both Cota and Urbina 6-0.

Rosa Madrid, Southwest's No. 3, beat Urbina 6-2, but fell 6-0 to Rincon and 6-2 to Cota.

Both teams will play at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with Southwest hosting Brawley and Calexico hosting Central Union.

Vincent Memorial 6

CALEXICO — The Brawley Union High School girls tennis team began Imperial Valley League play with a 12-6 victory over Vincent Memorial here Monday.

Vincent will play at Holtville at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
