HOLTVILLE — A crop-duster flag man was beaten and his truck shot after the crop duster's spray drifted over a group of people at a barbecue near here.

Imperial County Sheriff Harold Carter said the flag man, whose name was not released, warned the barbecuing group at 2396 Holt Road on Wednesday afternoon that crop-dusting was going to take place over the field across the road.

When some of the spray drifted toward the residence, people from the barbecue allegedly became angry and approached the flag man, said Sheriff's Office Investigator Kevin McGovern.

The flag man sustained bruises after being beaten by the fists of at least one member of the group, Carter said.

Deputies arrested a resident of the home where the barbecue was taking place, Paulino Magaña Cortez Sr, 51, on suspicion of battery.

The flag man's truck also became a target when one member of the group shot at it with a rifle. Two of the tires were hit, Carter said.

Deputies have identified a suspect in the shooting but had yet to make an arrest as of presstime this morning.

The incident is still under investigation.
