Fund raiser for deceased ECRMC nurse's kids Oct. 6

September 28, 2001|By RUDY YNIGUEZ, Staff Writer

Friends of the late Pam Fonseca invite the community to participate in a benefit fund raiser for Fonseca's children.

The event will be a tri-tip barbecue from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Moose Lodge, 2351 Highway 86, Imperial. The cost is $7 per person.

Colleagues of Fonseca at El Centro Regional Medical Center spoke fondly of her.

"We cared a lot for Pam. She was a part of us," said Rosalinda Soto, El Centro Regional endoscopy department clinical coordinator. "Pam was full of life, rambunctious, always willing to help."

Added Renee Hillex, a registered nurse in endoscopy: "When I think of her, I always think the room lit up when she came in because of her energy."

The proceeds from the fund raiser will be given to Fonseca's two children for their education.

"This is a benefit for one of our own," Hillex said.

Another colleague, Helen Dueck, an ECRMC scrub technician, said Fonseca enjoyed being around people, serving others, participating in 4-H and being active in her church.

Fonseca was born in San Diego but raised in Calexico, where she completed high school. She had an associate's degree in nursing from Imperial Valley College. Besides working for 11 years at ECRMC, Fonseca worked as a registered nurse at the former Calexico Hospital, Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley and Alvarado Medical Center in San Diego, where she was working at the time of her death on June 9.

Fonseca, 41, was headed to El Centro to visit her family when she was involved in an accident on Mountain Springs grade.

At El Centro Regional, Fonseca worked as a circulator in the operating room. She also worked in the recovery room and in her spare time worked the medical-surgical wings.

"She was very warm with the patients and made them feel welcome," Hillex said. "She was bilingual and that made it easier for her to communicate."

The fund raiser is the second being sponsored by hospital staff for a former colleague.
