50 years ago — The nip in the autumn air apparently spurred some persons to take a nip in El Centro, a look at the arrest reports indicated at the city Police Department. Eight arrests between 10 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. kept the jailer busier than usual.

40 years ago — The Casa de Amistad community center, 103 H. St., Brawley, offers a program of services including welfare calls, group work, recreation and health classes. For the past several years it also has had a well baby clinic.

30 years ago — A petition to put up for a statewide vote of the people the secret ballot for farm workers to use in choosing their union bargaining agent is expected to be ready for circulation this weekend at a meeting in Salinas for the Western States Association of Committees for Agriculture.

20 years ago — Westmorland officials today shut down the sewer system after a gas leak was traced to an underground tank at the Circle K market. Gasoline from the tank apparently seeped into the sewer system and officials today were flushing the system. The gasoline probably had been leaking since the April earthquake.
