Volleyball: Tigers fall in Yuma tourney

YUMA — The Imperial High volleyball team was knocked out in the first round of the Yuma High tournament here Saturday by host team Yuma, losing 2-1.

Imperial lost the first game 3-15, won the second 15-11 and narrowly lost the third 13-15.

The Tigers finished 4-4 in pool play beating Central Union High and Palo Verde both two times.

Leading Imperial in the tournament were Andrea Aguirre with 28 points and 22 kills and Lindsay Lugo with 51 assists and 15 points. Melanie Medina chipped in 19 points and 16 kills and Amy Holtz added 20 points for the Tigers.

Imperial (6-2 overall) will host Brawley Union High at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Valley Center 3, Holtville 2

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to Valley Center 3-2 here Saturday.

After winning the first two games 16-14 and 15-8, Holtville dropped three in a row 16-18, 10-15 and 12-15.


Leading Holtville were Regan Rothfleisch with 22 points, 22 kills, eight aces and seven blocks and Michelle Strahm with 37 assists, 19 points and six aces. Carly Johnson added 13 blocks and 11 kills and Claudia Lopez chipped in seven blocks for the Vikings.

Holtville (2-3 overall) will play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Central Union High in El Centro.
