50 years ago — A flawless job of control by the pilot was credited by Navy officials for saving the lives of 41 passengers and crew of three during an emergency landing at the El Centro Naval Auxiliary Air Station. The plane was en route from El Paso to San Diego.

40 years ago — An unknown gunman fired eight tracer bullets at a speeding Southern Pacific streamliner southeast of Niland. No one was injured. FBI agents took up the investigation from local authorities.

30 years ago — A rolling earthquake shook the Imperial Valley. No damage has been reported. The tremor occurred at 3:46 p.m. The epicenter was 10 miles west of Brawley. The quake registered 5 on the Richter Scale.

20 years ago — Tensions remain high in Westmorland as crews from local and state agencies continue to "pull" gasoline out of the sewer system from three large tanks at the local Circle K store.
