CALIPATRIA — The Imperial County Sheriff's Office and the De Anza Search and Rescue Unit were searching today for two men thought to be lost in the Mammoth Wash area northeast of here.

While there were few details available this morning, sheriff's Sgt. Pompeyo Tabarez said the men, who had been camping together, were reported missing about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

He said the men were thought to be ages 43 and 61. Their identities were unavailable this morning.

The search is focused on an area between Niland and Highway 78 in the North Algodones Dunes Wilderness area.

Mammoth Wash is about eight miles south of Niland and 15 miles north of Highway 78, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which was not involved in the search.

Tabarez said sheriff's ground and air units are involved in the search.

De Anza Search and Rescue is a volunteer unit led by the county Sheriff's Office.
