Southwest tennis remains perfect in IVL

The Southwest High girls tennis team won the battle of Imperial Valley League unbeatens, downing Central Union 13-5 in El Centro on Monday.

Leading Southwest (3-0 IVL) was No. 1 singles player Judy Hsu, who defeated Central's No. 1 Minnie Flores 6-1, No. 2 Kayla Wardrup 6-3 and No. 3 Angela Whitehead 6-0.

The Eagles' No. 2, Ashmi Ullal, fell 1-6 to Flores but picked up wins over Wardrup 7-6 (8-6) and Whitehead 6-0.

Rounding out the singles victories for Southwest was No. 3 Bianca Bonilla, who shut out Wardrup and Whitehead 6-0 but lost 1-6 to Flores.


On the doubles side, Karalisa Jones and Becky Leone, the No. 1 duo for Southwest, lost 1-6 to the Spartans' No. 1 team of Teresa Vea and Sheena Vogel but earned wins over No. 2 Monica Signorotti and Christina Montaño 6-1 and No. 3 Clarrissa Cota and Claudia Padilla 6-0.

Monnett De La Torre and Kim Slovak, the Eagles' No. 2 squad, lost to Vea/Vogel falling 2-6, but downed Signorotti/Montaño 6-1 and Cota/Padilla 6-0.

Earning the final two points for Southwest were the No. 3 team of Breezy Boniface and Kristina Estrada, who got wins over Signorotti/Montaño 6-3 and Cota/Padilla 6-0. Boniface/Estrada lost to Vea/Vogel 2-6.

Said Southwest coach Genaro Piniero: "Central is a pretty good team, but right now there's no team around here with the depth and experience that we have."

Both teams play at home in El Centro at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with Southwest hosting Vincent Memorial and Central (2-1 IVL) hosting Brawley Union High.

Brawley 16, Holtville 2

HOLTVILLE — The Brawley Union High girls tennis team improved to 2-1 in Imperial Valley League play with a 16-2 win over Holtville High here Monday.

The loss drops Holtville to 0-3 in the IVL.

Holtville will host Calexico at 5 p.m. Wednesday.


Calipatria 3, Borrego Springs 0

BORREGO SPRINGS — The Calipatria High volleyball team swept Borrego Springs 15-4, 17-15 and 15-0 here Monday.

Leading Calipatria were Lilia Humble with seven points and five kills and Jammie Bailey with eight points.

The Hornets will host Julian at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
