Cross country: Eagles run past Central

The Southwest High boys and girls cross country teams kicked off the Imperial Valley League season with decisive victories over Central Union High at Bucklin Park in El Centro on Thursday.

The Southwest boys cruised to a 15-42 win while the girls won primarily by default 15-50 as the Spartans were not able to field a complete team.

Leading the Eagles on the boys side were Doug Fulp, Garrett Bishop and Sal Acevedo all tying for first in 18 minutes, 38 seconds over the 3-mile course. Fulp was officially given first place with Bishop in second and Acevedo in third. Isaiah Obeso finished fourth in 19:27, followed by Devon Hood in fifth in 19:45 for the Eagles.

For Central, Alex Ibarra took sixth place in 20:04, followed by Eduardo Santiago in seventh (20:22) and Hipolito Valdez in eighth (20:24). Irving Palacios took 10th in 22:46 and Anthony Rosas was 11th in 23:19 for the Spartans.


One of Central's two finishers on the girls side won the race. Erica Camacho won by running a time of 21:57, with teammate Viviana Ortiz taking 10th in 29:45.

Leading the Southwest girls (1-0) were Monica Gamboa taking second in 24:21, Angela Villareal in third in 25:35 and Abril Diaz in fourth in 26:32. Jessica Thompson took fifth in 26:41 and Judith Kaye rounded things out in sixth in 26:52.

Both teams will host dual meets at home at 5 p.m. Thursday, with Southwest hosting Palo Verde and Central hosting Brawley.

Brawley vs. Calexico

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High School boys and girls cross country teams got off on the right foot in the Imperial Valley League with wins over Calexico here Thursday.

The Brawley girls had little trouble disposing of Calexico, winning 19-39. The Wildcat boys had a little tougher time but were still victorious 26-31.

Leading the Brawley girls was Claudia Dominguez taking first place in 20 minutes, 26 seconds, followed by Meg Allen in third in 21:28. Jennifer Cardenas took fourth in 21:45, with Xiomara Favela taking fifth (21:54) and Danitza Salceda taking sixth in 21:50.

Arturo Contreras led the Wildcat boys, finishing second in 17:07 followed by Marcos Torres in third (17:15). Jesus De Dios was fifth in 17:25 with Alfredo Campos taking seventh in 17:43 and Gerardo Contreras taking ninth in 17:46.

Calexico will travel to take on Holtville at 5 p.m. Thursday.
