Voice: Why is it racist to want a Mexican representative for the Valley?

October 05, 2001

Ever since Imperial County (once East San Diego) was settled, never has a Hispanic represented our valley in Sacramento. If now wanting a Mexican elected makes me a racist, then what can be said of nearly 100 years of representation by only those of European descent?

In the wake of the recent most horrendous attack on the United States (not America), now there is much talk of racial harmony and unity. Unfortunately only in time of war are we all "Americans" and we are all brothers and sisters.

During the Vietnam conflict I was privileged to serve (25th Infantry) my country. Even though 11 percent of our nation's population was of African decent, 33 percent of U.S. citizens killed were black. More unequal was that Hispanics were less than 4 percent; however 20 percent of "Americans" sent home in body bags were of Spanish surname.

And now, my son is wearing a U.S. military uniform and is waiting for orders. Salaam Alaykum!
