Thanks: Thanks extended for unity news conference, PSA, broadcast

October 05, 2001

The events of Sept. 11, 2001, changed the nation forever. Lives across the United States were impacted, as were numerous businesses.

The El Centro Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau responded to the crisis by calling a news conference, producing a public service announcement and half-hour program based on the news conference. The goal was to emphasize the importance of unity in America, regardless of religious or ethnic background.

The success of the news conference and the production of the public service announcement and half-hour program could not have been accomplished without the remarkable support of our chamber members. I would like to especially thank Prabhdeep Singh, M.D., Abdel Salem, Elias Moukarzel, M.D. and Kirti Shah for sharing their personal stories and reaction to the horrors we witnessed.

I would also like to thank Mayor Cheryl Walker for her words of encouragement and Police Chief Ray Loera and Deputy District Attorney Deborah Owen for their commitment to arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of perpetrating a hate crime.

The message of tolerance will continue on the airwaves thanks to Rutter Media. They donated time to create and produce a 30-second PSA that has been distributed to all television stations. I also want to thank Aaron Popejoy of Conveyor Group for filming and editing the news conference so that it could be aired over Imperial County Office of Education's Channel 99. Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank Ritu Singh and the chamber staff for all the work they did to put the news conference together.

The chamber is grateful that citizens of Imperial Valley have not experience any retaliatory attacks. It is our hope that we continue to stand united against the real threat — terrorism.
