CALEXICO — A man wielding a handgun attempted to rob a market here Thursday but was fended off by a clerk who struck the suspect with a baseball bat, police reported.

The incident was at the Vaquero market in the 2300 block of Rockwood Avenue around noon.

Police were searching for one suspect in connection with the attempted robbery.

That same suspect was thought to be involved in the theft of shoes from Payless Shoesource in the same center as Vaquero market.

Calexico police Sgt. Jim Neujahr said the theft at Payless occurred either just before or soon after the attempted robbery.

In the Payless case, the suspect did not pull out a gun. However, the suspect fit the description of the gun-wielding suspect who entered Vaquero market.

In the Vaquero case, the suspect walked in and demanded money from the clerk.

Neujahr said the clerk managed to pick up a bat and strike the suspect, who then fled from the market without any money.

A description of the suspect was unavailable from Calexico police this morning.

Neujahr said the investigation is ongoing.
