50 years ago — A veteran of the Imperial Valley who celebrated his 90th birthday isn't as outspoken in his praise of the Valley as his wife, but admits there is "something about it that attracts, even the ditch water," according to L.B. Akin of Brawley.

40 years ago — Comedian Danny Thomas will headline a Hollywood show at the county fairgrounds Dec. 9 to benefit Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. The Rev. Victor Salandini, pastor and the man who brought Bing Crosby here two years ago, said two shows and a dance are planned for Dec. 9.

30 years ago — A proposal to make the county airport "self-supporting" under a strong airport manager was adopted by the county Board of Supervisors. The board decided to streamline airport management under the Public Works Department with a division manager.

20 years ago — The Board of Supervisors tried to avoid an explosive situation today. Spurred by the Westmorland gasoline leak last week, the board directed the county staff to study regulations and procedures for the placement of underground tanks.
