50 years ago — Defective wiring was listed as the cause of a fire this morning at the Farmers Co. at the corner of Eighth and J streets in Brawley. Firemen put out the blaze before it could cause any major damage.

40 years ago — No dumping of treated or untreated sewage into the Salton Sea would be allowed under recommendations by a water pollution study committee. A public hearing on the committee's recommendations will be held in Salton City.

30 years ago — Revenge is the key word as the 1971 Desert Valleys League season starts with games scheduled for fields in Brawley, Coachella and Palm Springs. Three DVL varsities have escaped unbeaten through non-league games.

20 years ago — Five years ago Smokey Rolland purchased an airplane, then found he couldn't afford to fix it. He solved the dilemma by turning the old military cargo plane into a mobile home. Rolland stopped in El Centro on Wednesday on the way home to Cardiff-By-The-Sea. He has spent most of last year and a half touring in the converted C-47, which has been featured on several television shows, including "Real People."
