Eagles' tennis improves to 5-0 in IVL

HOLTVILLE — The Southwest High tennis team improved to 5-0 in Imperial Valley League action with a 17-1 dismantling of Holtville High here Monday.

In singles action, No. 1 for Southwest, Judy Hsu, defeated Holtville's Christina Castro 6-0, Jamie Laison 6-2 and Denise Beltran 6-0.

Bianca Bonilla, the Eagles' No. 2, shutout Castro and Beltran both 6-0 and beat Laison 6-3.

Southwest No. 3 Ashmi Ullal beat Castro and Beltran both 6-1, but lost 4-6 to Laison.

On the doubles side, the Eagles' No. 1 team of Kim Slovak and Monnett De La Torre downed Holtville's No. 1 duo of Katy Strahm and Courtney Ward 6-2 and No. 2 Hilarie Singh and Melissa Vizcaino 6-1.

Kristina Estrada and Breezy Boniface, No. 2 for Southwest, beat Strahm/Ward 6-2, Singh/Vizcaino 6-1 and the Vikings' No. 3 team of Kristina Baily and Cyndi Bungle 6-0.


The Eagles' No. 3 duo of Karelisa Jones and Becky Leone defeated Strahm/Ward and Singh/Vizcaino both 6-3.

Southwest's substitute team of Linda Hsu and Sarah Kim beat Baily/Bungle 6-4 and a second Eagles' substitute squad of Rosa Madrid and Michelle Melendez defeated Strahm/Ward 6-2.

Both teams will host matches at 5 p.m. Wednesday with Southwest taking on Calexico and Holtville (0-5 IVL) playing Central Union High.

Vincent Memorial 8

The Central Union High tennis team narrowly edged Vincent Memorial 10-8 in Imperial Valley League action in El Centro on Monday.

Vincent Memorial will play at Brawley at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Brawley 14, Calexico 4

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High tennis team improved to 4-1 in Imperial Valley League action with a 14-4 hammering of Calexico High here Monday.

Mountain Empire 0

IMPERIAL — The Imperial High volleyball team had little trouble getting past Mountain Empire, winning 15-5, 15-13 and 15-5 here Monday.

Leading Imperial were Andrea Aguirre with 10 kills, eight points and three blocks and Lindsay Lugo with 11 assists and 10 points.

The Tigers (15-4 overall) will host Holtville at 6 p.m. Thursday.
