Touchdown Club gives thanks

October 09, 2001

On behalf of the Holtville Viking Touchdown Club, we are writing this letter of appreciation. In recent years our school district has faced financial hardships and has been unable to provide an adequate budget for our athletic programs; therefore, this club has stepped up to take on much of that responsibility for the Holtville High School football teams.

New equipment has been purchased such as helmets, pads, girdles, pants, jerseys, helmet decals, etc., all funded entirely by the Viking Touchdown Club. Players have been given the opportunity to attend instructional camps here in Holtville as well as other areas. We have developed a flag football program that has been a great outreach to the youth of our community.

Most definitely, one of our greatest accomplishments to date has been the construction of a new weight facility at the high school, which is benefitting not only our football players but all our athletes as well as students enrolled in weight training.

In the past couple years, these students have begun participating in various weight-lifting competitions throughout the Valley, along with hosting their own annual Marv Wood Power Meet. Our new weight facility has the capability of housing 60 lifters. Cement has been poured, fences have been erected, shade covers have been attached and a new locker room has been constructed so our players have a safe place to keep their equipment. A multitude of new weights and benches have been purchased by our club to help our players improve in strength training.

We are so proud of what has been accomplished through the Viking Touchdown Club over the last few years. We also know that none of this would have been possible without our club members and community members who have volunteered so much of their time, energy and expertise to our endeavors.

We give a special thanks to our Vikings head coach Jim Sturgeon, who has been the driving force behind this club. He has been a true leader and motivator to all of us, players and parents alike. Without his vision, this club would not exist and our players would be missing a lot of positive experiences.

We must also appreciate every business and community member who has purchased football program ads or sign boards or generously donated to our club's efforts.

Because of this, we consider our accomplishments to be the accomplishments of a dedicated community and we hope you will all take pride in what our community has achieved. Thanks again for your continued support.
