Voice: Brawley council slighting Graham, Kuhn in look for police chief

October 10, 2001

Letter to Mayor Johnson, members of the Brawley City Council and the city manager:

I have just heard some distressing news that I hope you can tell me is not true.

Is the city of Brawley advertising for the position of chief of police? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that position currently held by Henry Graham and Bob Kuhn? I have heard that Bob Kuhn is on medical leave. Now if Kuhn leaves, doesn't that leave Graham in the position?

As I understand it, if you advertise for the chief position, Graham and Kuhn will have to apply for the position they have already competently been doing for the last five years.

Talk about a slap in the face. After almost 30 years of hard work and dedication, it's a shame for them to be treated this way. I can't believe you have the audacity to treat them, or anyone for that matter, in this way.

My question to you, Mayor Johnson, members of the council and City Manager Jerry Santillan is, "Are you acting on what is best for the city or is this some personal agenda of one or more of you on the council?"

As a resident and registered voter, as well as a taxpayer in the city of Brawley, I feel this proposal should be made public to let the people have a say.

Now if all of this is not true, I truly apologize for this letter. However, if there is any inkling of truth to this, you all should be ashamed of yourselves!
