Tennis: Eagles breeze past Bulldogs

The Southwest High School girls tennis team kept its Imperial Valley League record perfect with a 17-1 thrashing of Calexico at Southwest High in El Centro on Wednesday.

The Eagles (9-2, 6-0 IVL) were led by their No. 2 doubles team, Monette De La Torre/Kim Slovak, who earned three wins. The No. 1 team, Breezy Boniface/Christina Estrada, won twice as did the No. 3 team of Karelisa Jones/Becky Leone. The teams of Linda Hsu/Sarah Kim and Rebekah Myung/Michelle Melendez both picked up one win for Southwest.

In singles, Southwest had its way as Judy Hsu, Bianca Bonilla and Ashley Ullal all got two wins.

The Eagles will be back in action at 5 p.m. Monday at Brawley. Calexico next plays at 5 p.m. Monday in El Centro against Central.

Holtville 10, Central 8

HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High School girls tennis team beat Central Union High 10-8 in Imperial Valley League play here Wednesday.


The Vikings (2-4) got two wins from each of its singles players.

Holtville's No. 1, Dennise Beltran, fell to Central No. 1 Minnie Flores (1-6) but beat No. 2 Angela Whitehead (6-2) and No. 3 Stephanie Jensen (6-1).

The Vikings' No. 2, Jamie Larson, met with similar success with scores of 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 as did Holtville No. 3 Samantha Bailey with scores of 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Holtville's No. 1 doubles team, Courtney Ward/Katie Strahm, beat Central's No. 1, Sheena Vogel/Theresa Vea, 6-0, fell to No. 2 Monica Signorotti/Christina Montaño 5-7 and beat No. 3 Carissa Cota/Claudia Padilla 6-0.

The Vikings' No. 2 duo, Christina Castro/Melissa Vizcarra, had scores of 0-6, 1-6, 7-5 as did No. 3 team Hillary Singh/Lizzy Narvais 0-6, 0-6, 7-6 (6-4).

The Vikings will be back in action at 5 p.m. Friday at Imperial Valley College against Vincent Memorial High. Central returns to action at 5 p.m. Monday at home in El Centro against Calexico.

Vincent 10, Brawley 8

BRAWLEY — The Vincent Memorial High tennis team topped Brawley 10-8 in IVL action here Wednesday.

Claudia Gonzalez led the Scots (3-2) with three wins in singles.

The teams of Ashley Abubo/Stephanie Dominguez and Jenna Rebik/Brooke Ruth won three sets each for Brawley. The team of Debby Ybarra/Bettylou Espita picked up two wins for the Wildcats (4-2).

Vincent returns to action at 5 p.m. Friday against Holtville at IVC. Brawley will next play at 5 p.m. Monday at home against Southwest.
