BOMBAY BEACH — An undocumented immigrant was beaten Sunday and left here reportedly after his family could not pay the smuggling fee.

Jorge Cortez, 30, of the state of Jalisco, Mexico, had reportedly entered the country illegally Friday.

Making it across the border, he was taken to the Los Angeles area by a smuggler. However, when they arrived in that city the immigrant's family could not meet the smuggling fee.

Imperial County Sheriff's Office Investigator Gabe Vela said Cortez was brought back to the Imperial Valley to the Bombay Beach area at gunpoint.

Cortez reportedly was beaten in the Bombay Beach area before being left there. He then managed to make his way to authorities.
