WESTMORLAND — The City Council will hear presentations from six candidates seeking the council seat left vacant by Thomas Marquez's resignation early this month.

During a council meeting Wednesday, the six applicants will give three-minute presentations in support of their candidacies. The council could appoint someone during the meeting and hopes to appoint someone as soon as possible. Marquez had three years remaining on his four-year term.

Those seeking the vacant position are Maria Olivas, Lorenzo Otero, Martha Cruz, Thomas Landrum, Sonia Castaneda and City Clerk Sally Traylor.

At a council meeting Oct. 3 a letter submitted by Thomas Marquez was read by Traylor to the council and residents announcing Marquez's resignation.

In the letter he states he was unable to attend council meetings because of his on-call status in Los Angeles due to the recent terrorist attacks on the East Coast. Marquez is in the Air Force Reserve.
