Southwest tennis improves to 7-0

BRAWLEY — The Southwest High girls tennis team remained perfect in the Imperial Valley League with a 13-5 win over Brawley Union High here Monday, improving to 7-0.

Leading Southwest were its No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams, which both went 3-0.

The No. 2 team of Breezy Boniface and Kristina Estrada defeated Brawley's Jenna Rebik and Brooke Ruth 7-6 (8-6), Debbie Ibarra and Betty Lou Espitia 6-2 and Ashley Abubo and Destiny Dominguez 6-1.

Becky Leone and Karelisa Jones, the No. 3 team for Southwest, downed Rebik/Ruth 6-3, Ibarra/Espitia and Abubo/Dominguez both 6-1.

The Eagles' No. 1 pair of Monnett De La Torre and Kim Slovak lost to Ibarra/Espitia 2-6 but picked up wins over Rebik/Ruth 6-2 and Abubo/Dominguez 6-1.

In singles Southwest was led by No. 3 player Bianca Bonilla, who defeated the Wildcats' No. 1 Erica Herrera 6-4 and No. 2 Shehla Admani 6-1 but fell to No. 3 Kendra Caffarella 5-7.


Ashmi Ullal, No. 1 for the Eagles, beat Admani 6-2, but fell to Herrera 2-6 and Caffarella 1-6.

The No. 3 singles player for the Eagles, Judy Hsu, got past Herrera 6-2 but lost 1-6 to Admani.

Rounding out the Southwest scoring was substitute Shelly Dunn, who shut out Brawley sub Allison Nielson 6-0.

Said Eagle coach Genaro Piniero: "This was a close match, much closer than the score indicates. Brawley just came out firing and we had to rise to the occasion and just do our job."

Southwest will play at Central Union High at 5 p.m. Wednesday and Brawley (4-3 IVL) will play at Holtville at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Central 10, Calexico 8

The Central Union High girls tennis team edged Calexico High 10-8 in Imperial Valley League action in El Centro on Monday.

Calexico will host Vincent Memorial at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
