Voice: Departing BUHSD trustee endorses Arterberry, Hansen

October 19, 2001

I'm glad to see politics are alive and well for the upcoming school board elections at Brawley Union High School District.

As a departing trustee, I would like to offer a few hints into what I see ahead for BUHSD and why I am supporting the incumbent Rodney Arterberry and Mr. Bob Hansen.

First and most importantly, teacher contract negotiations begin in January. BUHS must pay its teachers as much as economically possible; having top-notch, highly motivated teachers, is a must.

This is why the experience of Rodney Arterberry, and the budgeting expertise of Bob Hansen, are essential. (Bob Hansen oversees an Imperial Irrigation District budget of $70 million.) School budgets are very delicate. If the teachers are paid even 1 percent over what can be afforded, the finances of BUHS could return to what they were in the 1990s. This I assure you, we do not want.

Secondly, our superintendent, Mr. Garth Isom, will likely be retiring before these trustees' four-year terms are over. Our principal, Mr. Bud Smith, will be retiring at the end of this school year. Replacing these positions with outstanding leaders is vital to the future of BUHS.

Please join me in supporting our children by electing Rodney Arterberry and Bob Hansen.
