E.C. police arrest man for allegedly brandishing gun

October 21, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

El Centro police officers arrested a man Friday after he allegedly brandished a gun at a group of people in the 500 block on Main Street that afternoon.

The Police Department received multiple calls about the incident shortly after it happened around 5:30 p.m., said Sgt. Mike Crankshaw.

Officers responded to the scene quickly and, with the help of citizens, located Christopher Anthony Sandoval, 18, of El Centro, hiding nearby behind Murray Cleaners at 138 S. 5th St., Crankshaw said.

A gun, which police think possibly was stolen, and a police scanner were found in the same area, Crankshaw said.

Apparently, Sandoval approached a group of people to ask for a ride, Crankshaw said. When they refused, he reportedly brandished the gun. Other people in the area saw the incident and were able to point officers to Sandoval's hiding place behind the cleaners.

The incident is still under investigation.
