Eagles' tennis continues perfect streak

The Southwest High School girls tennis team moved one step closer to a perfect season in the Imperial Valley League with an 11-7 win over Vincent Memorial High in El Centro on Monday.

Leading Southwest to its 9-0 IVL record were the play of its doubles, which did not lose a set.

Heading the charge were the No. 1 team of Monnett De La Torre and Kim Slovak defeating Vincent Memorial's Andrea Arizona and Bonnie Walter 6-1, Lauren Gamboa and Melissa Magallanes 6-0 and Adriana Vildosola and Ana Montaño 6-3.

Southwest's No. 2 team of Karelisa Jones and Becky Leone downed Arizona/Walter 6-0, Gamboa/Magallanes 6-1 and Vildosola/Montaño 6-4.

Rounding out the doubles wins for the Eagles were No. 3 Breezy Boniface and Kristina Estrada blanking Arizona/Walter and Gamboa/Vildosola, both 6-0, and getting past Vildosola/Montaño 6-4.

Singles play was dominated by Vincent Memorial led by No. 1 Claudia Gonzalez, who shutout Southwest's Bianca Bonilla, Ashmi Ullal and Judy Hsu, all 6-0.


Alejandra Sanchez also picked up three wins for the Scots defeating Bonilla 6-4, Ullal 6-1 and Hsu 6-3.

No. 3 for Vincent Memorial, Leana Guerrero, got past Bonilla 6-3 but fell to Ullal 1-6 and to Hsu 0-6.

Both teams will play at 5 p.m. Wednesday with Southwest hosting Holtville and Vincent Memorial traveling to play Central Union High in El Centro.

Brawley 11, Central 7

The Brawley Union High girls tennis team improved to 6-3 in the Imperial Valley League with an 11-7 win over Central Union High in El Centro on Monday.

Brawley will next play at Calexico at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

CALEXICO — The Holtville High girls tennis team narrowly edged Calexico in Imperial Valley League play here Monday, winning a 9-9 tie by points scored 77-73.
