Calipatria high names two Elks teens of the month

Calipatria High School recently named seniors Ryan Anthony Newton and Janet Lopez as teen-agers of the month for September.

Newton is his class president, Friday Night Live president, Boys State delegate, California Scholarship Federation member, Upward Bound math and science participant, environmental and spatial technology program president, varsity captain of the school's basketball team, a scholar athlete, honor student and governor's scholarship recipient.

He enjoys playing basketball, video games, shopping and talking to his friends.

His mother is Michelle Fitzpatrick of Calipatria.

Lopez is the associated student body vice president, Future Homemakers of America treasurer and wrestling president. She is also a statistician for the school's softball team.

She enjoys watching wrestling matches and being involved in school activities.

Her parents are Evangelina and Benny Lopez of Calipatria.

The awards are sponsored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Brawley Lodge 1420.

Selections are judged on character, leadership, service, citizenship and scholastic achievements.
