AOW: Jones and Leone helping in Eagles' perfect season

October 23, 2001|By ERIC GALVAN, Sports Writer

Watch Southwest High School's No. 1 doubles team of Karelisa Jones and Becky Leone and one would almost think they share the same brain.

On the tennis court each knows what the other is thinking. The cohesive unit of Jones and Leone is one of the best duos in the Valley.

The two continued their winning streak last week, picking up a combined six set wins in two Eagle victories against Brawley Union and Central Union high schools.

"Those two (schools) … have been some of our biggest competition this year. So there was a little pressure on us. But the key was not to get frustrated with anything," said Jones, a 17-year-old senior. "With Becky, I just try to encourage her as much as I can. She's really aggressive and plays really well."

Said Leone, a 15-year-old sophomore: "When we play together we just click. That's how it was when we first started playing together. We've always just worked well with each other. Because this is my first year on the varsity, I just want to do my best."

At the beginning of the year the two were alternated between No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. But a few weeks ago everything started coming together and they began playing better than any other doubles team on the Southwest squad, which elevated them to the No. 1 spot.

Since then they have basically dominated the doubles scene in the Imperial Valley League. Because of their success, they have helped the Eagles to a perfect 8-0 mark in the IVL.

Said Southwest coach Genaro Piniero: "Last year Becky was on the J.V. and she's one of the players that was dedicated for the whole year always working to get better. Now she's tasting the fruits of her labor. She works really well with Karelisa. They're the kind of players that don't get down on each other and just play really well as a team."
