Fire guts one-bedroom home in El Centro

Fire gutted a one-bedroom El Centro house late Thursday, destroying nearly all the personal possessions of the resident, according to the city Fire Department.

The fire erupted in the bedroom of a home on the 600 block of Lenrey Avenue shortly before 10:30 p.m.

Nine firefighters battled the blaze for about 15 minutes before extinguishing the flames.

El Centro fire Capt. Alex Romero said while flames were kept to the bedroom and bathroom, smoke and heat damage left the interior of the house destroyed.

The one occupant, a man thought to be in his 40s, whose name was unavailable, was in the shower when the fire started.

He managed to get out of the house and escape injury. A resident about two blocks away spotted smoke rising over the neighborhood and called 911.

Romero said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

Romero said it was difficult to see the man lose all his possessions.

"That is the hard part of the job," he said. "We feel for families."

Fire Marshal Linual White said the man rented the house, and the property owner made arrangements for the man to stay in an area hotel for the night.

White said because the man did not have transportation to the hotel, fire crews packed up what possessions he did have, and gave him a ride to the hotel.

Information on the man's status today was unavailable.
