Cross country: Wildcats run past Palo Verde

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High boys and girls cross country teams both remained perfect in the Imperial Valley League with wins over Palo Verde here Thursday.

On the boys side, Brawley had little trouble disposing of the visitors, winning 18-45.

Leading the Wildcats was Marcos Torres in first place, setting a new course record in 16 minutes, 19 seconds, beating the previous mark by three seconds. Taking second for Brawley was Arturo Contreras in 16:56, followed by Gerardo Contreras in fourth in 17:29, Hector Martinez in fifth (17:49) and Luis Maldonado in sixth in 17:50.

Things weren't as easy on the girls side as Brawley edged Palo Verde 25-36. Leading the Wildcats were Laura Rubio in third in 22:33, Julieta Camarena in fourth in 23:14, Susan Flores in fifth (23:29) and Lizeth Acevedo in sixth in 23:43. Rounding things out for Brawley was Reanna Duran, taking seventh in 23:56.


Brawley will travel to take on Southwest at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Southwest splits with Holtville

HOLTVILLE — The Southwest High School cross country team split a meet with Holtville at Barbara Worth Golf Resort near here Thursday.

The Eagle boys flew to a 20-39 win, while the girls lost 26-30.

Sal Acevedo took second (14:05) to lead the Southwest boys (8-0, 4-0 IVL). Garrett Bishop was third (14:13), Isaiah Obeso, fourth (14:51), Doug Fulp, fifth (14:52), and Devon Hood, sixth (15:45).

Holtville's Liz Robinson won the girls race. Southwest (6-2, 2-2) was led by Monica Gamboa in second (17:16), Abril Diaz in fifth (19:09), Angie Mitchell in sixth (19:14), Melissa Aguirre in eighth (19:51) and Leslie Correa in ninth (19:57).

The Eagles return to action at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Sunbeam Lake against Brawley. Holtville will next run at 5 p.m. Thursday at home against Central.
