A 59-year-old Calexico bicyclist suffered major injuries after his bike was struck from behind by a motorist who drifted onto the shoulder of Highway 111 south of El Centro on Saturday.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the bicyclist, Ruben Quihuis of Calexico, was pedaling south on the shoulder of Highway 111 south of McCabe Road.
He was struck from behind by 79-year-old Martin Flores of El Centro, who was driving south on Highway 111.
The accident happened when Flores' vehicle drifted onto the right asphalt shoulder, striking Quihuis from behind.
Quihuis was transferred from El Centro Regional Medical Center and flown to the University of California San Diego Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
