CALEXICO — Police here arrested a 29-year-old Salinas man on suspicion of robbery this morning after he allegedly faked having a weapon to take beer from a convenience store.

Jose Carlos Hernandez was booked into county jail with his bail set at $20,000.

Calexico police Sgt. Jim Neujahr alleged a man walked into the 7-Eleven on Cole Road and Rockwood Avenue after 2 a.m. and attempted to purchase beer.

When the clerk would not sell him the alcohol based on a state law that prohibits sale of alcohol after 2 a.m., the man allegedly placed his hand in his pants pocket and said he had a weapon.

The clerk then handed over the beer and the suspect fled.

Police found Hernandez a short distance from the store with beer. He was arrested without further incident.
