Hellum carries Spartans past Palo Verde 21-7

BLYTHE — Anthony Hellum scored three touchdowns and intercepted three passes to lead the Central Union High School football team to a 21-7 win over Palo Verde in Imperial Valley League play here Friday.

"I feel we played better," said Spartan coach Joe Apodaca. "We executed our plays better, but we still have some edges to smooth out."

Hellum's first score came on a 10-yard run in the first quarter. He then caught a 45-yard pass from Manuel Ponce to put the Spartans up 14-0 in the second quarter.

Central took a 14-7 lead at the break and added its final score in the third quarter when Hellum returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown.

"We played as a team," added Apodaca. "We executed better, but we still have some work to do. I was glad for the win."

The Spartans improve to 2-6, 1-1 IVL with the win. Central will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Calexico.
