WESTMORLAND — The City Council here will have one last chance Tuesday night to appoint a new council member.
The council must appoint a new member Tuesday night if the city is to avoid a special election.
The seat was left vacant by Thomas Marquez, who resigned earlier this month. Marquez resigned because of his on-call status in Los Angeles. Marquez is in the Air Force reserves.
The council on Oct. 17 heard short presentations from Maria Olivas, Martha Cruz, Thomas Landrum and Sally Traylor, all of whom are seeking the vacant seat.
Lorenzo Otero and Sonia Castaneda applied for the seat but withdrew their applications.
The council tried to appoint someone Oct. 17 but the votes were split 2-2 between Landrum and Cruz.
Mayor Henry Halcon and councilman Rumaldo Marquez voted for Cruz while councilmen John Makin and Lawrence Ritchie voted for Landrum.
