Voice: Cox, the Elmores and others had foresight about water entanglements

October 31, 2001

The recent letter by Mr. Hurley regarding our current water situation is total balderdash. Misinformed people without a sense of history are the Karen Langlioses of the world.

Prior to 1985, Don Cox, the Elmore family, and several other responsible farmers were lone voices of forewarning regarding our agricultural water management. Their livelihood and the livelihood of their progeny depended on it. They realized that the state could rule us in violation of "reasonable and beneficial use" if we continued to waste farm water.

Their words were not heeded in time and the state did just that. Now we are stuck in a tough situation with limited options. We have some good, wise and concerned people working on our best course of action. There is no perfect solution, but let's pray that the best solution for the good of the Valley as a whole is achieved.
