Voice: Farmers know the supermarket business is the way to go

November 01, 2001

I have to ask both Johnny Boy and Cliff Smith, "How can you be so mean to John Garcia?" You both offered to help John Garcia get into farming. Both of you know he would end up losing his house, car and any other assets he may have with bad farm prices.

You should help John Garcia get into the supermarket business. Then he can pay the farmers 15 cents for a head of lettuce and sell it for $1.25, ask the farmer to pay him to take the asparagus and sell it for $2 a pound, pay the farmer 10 cents a pound for carrots and sell them for $1 a pound, pay the farmer 5 cents for the wheat in a loaf of bread and sell it for $2.50, pay the cattleman 60 cents a pound for beef and sell it for $6, tell the sheepman he's dead and buy lamb from New Zealand.

I could go on, but you boys know he'll go broke farming. Better yet, he should work for the Imperial Irrigation District. You only get fired for being "smart" over there.
