Smith leads IVL golfers in final

BORREGO SPRINGS — The Imperial Valley League held its golf finals at the Borrego Springs golf course here Thursday with Brawley Union High's Erica Smith setting a league record, shooting a 95 on the 18-hole course.

Taking second was Brawley's Alissa Koon with a 98 followed by Palo Verde's Lauren Ray with a 102 and Central Union High's Clarissa Maldonado in fourth with a 103. Central's Stephanie Schuler shot a 117 to finish fifth followed by teammate Claudia Maldonado with a 119.

The IVL final was originally set as a CIF San Diego Section post-season qualifier, but because of rule changes it was not. Instead, the IVL coaches used the final to select the leagues all-first and second teams.

The top six finishers were named to the first team with the next six earning spots on the second team.

Ray, however, was medalist in all regular season IVL meets and was selected to compete in CIF and was named league MVP.


Finishing in the next six spots and making the IVL second team were Holtville's C.C. Wells with a 120 and Kassidy Sanden with a 121. Palo Verde's Sabrina Martinez and the Vikings' Christina Croak each shot 122s followed by Holtville's Rebecca Holdridge with a 123 and Central's Hyejin Kim with a 124.

In the team portion of CIF, Central will travel to take on Warner Springs at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

IVC men's soccer

The Imperial Valley College men's soccer team played Palomar to a 2-2 tie in Pacific Coast Conference play in El Centro on Friday.

Scoring for IVC were Pedro Diaz and Osvaldo Lopez.

The Arabs will finish the season at 1 p.m. Tuesday, traveling to take on Palm Desert.

IVC volleyball

The Imperial Valley College volleyball team lost a 3-2 Pacific Coast Conference heartbreaker to San Diego Mesa College in El Centro on Friday.

IVC lost 26-30, 30-25, 30-24, 21-30 and 9-15 to fall to 1-7 in the PCC.

Leading the Arabs in the loss were Jello Moore with 14 blocks and 13 kills, Marquita Travis with 12 kills and seven blocks and Monique Medina with 20 digs. Yvette Rodriguez recorded a career-high 36 assists for IVC.

The Arabs (9-10 overall) will host Palomar at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Dynamo U-12 soccer

PARKER, Ariz. — The Dynamo under-13 soccer team of El Centro kicked off its season with two wins in the Parker Soccer Classic here Saturday.

Dynamo picked up a 6-0 win over Prescott and an 8-3 victory against Lake Havasu to advance to the tournament finals against Flagstaff today.

In the first game, Dynamo's Juan Rodriguez recorded a hat trick, scoring three goals for his team. Hugo Ortega, Jonathan Marin and Edson Oceguera each added goals for Dynamo.

Against Lake Havasu, David Marin and Jose Villareal each scored two goals for Dynamo. Pedro Ramirez, Jonathan Marin, Oceguera and Rodriguez added a goal each.
