The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors is scheduled to take formal action Tuesday to name the El Centro generating station after former IID Director Don Cox.

Cox has been credited with saving rate-payers millions of dollars.

The board meets in open session at 5 p.m. in the William R. Condit Auditorium, 1285 Broadway, El Centro.

The board is scheduled to consider formally adopting a resolution against using fallowing as a method for generating water to help restore the Salton Sea.

To date, however, the board has not formally adopted a definition of fallowing.

Board President Andy Horne said he defines it as deliberately taking land out of production for the purpose of transferring the water or using it for the environment; "For something other than farming," he said.

Division 3 Director Lloyd Allen said he does not have a definition. He said fallowing is used various ways by farmers, including to let the ground rest, to provide hunting habitat and under government order.

The district is expected to seek a similar resolution to the county Board of Supervisors.

In other action, the board:

>> will be asked to pay an additional $112,494 as the district's 25 percent share of the quantification settlement agreement's environmental study.

>> will receive an update on the district's efficiency study.

>> will be asked to approve a $15 million public benefits program for 2002.

>> will be asked to approve an additional $800,000 in public benefits funds be spent through Dec. 31 on the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning rebate program.

>> will be asked to pay $146,515 to join the Southwest Reserve Sharing Group instead of paying $2.2 million to be a member of a similar power group.

>> will be asked to pay $12,183 in dues to the county Office of Emergency Services.

>> will consider becoming a member of the county weed- management area.

>> will be asked to authorize the sale of 1,200 sulfur dioxide air emission allowances.
