>>50 years ago — Featuring treasure hunt prizes in many electrical appliances, $100 in household equipment and 10 large bags of groceries each day, the Imperial Irrigation District, Post-Press and El Centro home appliance dealer will sponsor the All-Electric Cooking School, which will be open in the United Artists theater in El Centro.

>>40 years ago — Russia's series of nuclear tests has polluted the world's atmosphere with radioactive clouds. Notwithstanding, the people of the Imperial Valley appear to be making no grand rush to build fallout shelters.

>>30 years ago — Treatment of heroin addicts with methadone could begin almost immediately at Imperial General Hospital. County Administrator Arthur M. Alexander said he was told by state Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement county hospitals do not need state approval to use the controversial artificial opiate in withdrawal treatment.

>>20 years ago — The annual Cowbelles' Cook-off kicked off Cattle Call Silver Anniversary festivities in the best country style Thursday night. A fashion show, Whiskerino contest, a Western dance contest, a Barbershop Harmony Society chorus and the Cowbelles' barbecue beef dinner were all part of the festivities.
