Our Opinion: IVC events meet needs

November 06, 2001

As our only community college, Imperial Valley College provides a lot to the community. Two good examples of that service occurred in October as the college had its annual college and university day and its career fair.

Both programs are extremely important to the people of the Imperial Valley in that both each year open doors to new possibilities. Living in the Valley it is possible for young people to not realize all the career possibilities available. It is easy for people to have the misconception there are few opportunities and thus they may not see a need to seek a higher education or advanced training.

The college and university day provides a clear example of what is out there for youths and anyone else if they are willing to work hard. Students from all over the Imperial Valley have a chance to attend college and university day to learn about what opportunities there are for higher education.

The career fair works quite the same way. This year's fair was combined with a showcase of industrial technology and career opportunities available for those interested in pursuing such training. The career fair is a critically important event because it shows youths job opportunities they might not have thought of or been introduced to without the fair.

There are a number of opportunities locally for those with the necessary training and education. And there are opportunities beyond the boundaries of the Valley for those who wish to move to other areas.

We hope that more of those who leave the Valley to pursue an education will return here to share their knowledge and abilities, but that depends on opportunities being and created here for professional people. More and more of those opportunities are opening for our more talented college graduates.

It is good for people to know they can dream and then pursue their dreams. IVC is doing what it can to help in that effort by showing people what is out there if they are willing to take the leap.
