>>50 years ago — Loy Edgar Brogden, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Brogden of El Centro, has been elected president of the freshman class at California Polytechnic Institute, San Luis Obispo. He is a graduate of Central Union High School.

>>40 years ago — Final plans have been made for the El Centro Sunshine Fly-in Air Show this weekend. Ben Jones, chairman of the aviation committee, said the event will draw a number of visiting aircraft.

>>30 years ago — By a 3-2 margin, the Calexico City Council applied the necessary muscle authorized under the state Health and Safety Code and ousted the five-member Housing Authority commission.

>>20 years ago — A 30-year-old crop duster pilot was killed Saturday morning when his plane crashed in a field near the intersection of Lindsey and Garst roads northwest of Calipatria. The pilot was identified as William Scott Byrd of Brawley. The cause of the accident is under investigation by both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
