Voice: Feminists, liberals largely to blame for deadbeat dads

November 16, 2001

I have been hearing a lot of "deadbeat dads" and frankly I'm having difficulty with this issue.

Personally, I blame these dads' folly on society who made them this way. I can remember when Vice President Dan Quayle talked about family values and the screaming liberals and feminists laughed at him. I recall former President Clinton said he was tired of hearing about family values and he lived up to his statement.

Hollywood gave us Murphy Brown and the message was that a woman does not need a husband to raise a child. President Johnson gave us the "Great Society" and began castigating women on transitional assistance if the father came around.

Then it seemed a lot of folks wanted "free love" but when a woman wanted an abortion the father had no say in the matter.

I think it to be paradoxically facetious and sad that certain elements in our society want it all their way until they realize that it takes bucks to raise a child and then the woman tenaciously pursues her male counterpart.

Remember someone said, it takes a village to raise a child — well, where's the village?
