Three locals earn trips to state meet

SAN DIEGO — Three local cross country runners earned trips to the state meet at the San Diego CIF Section cross country finals at Morley Field here Saturday.

Holtville High School's Liz Robinson took sixth (18 minutes 16 seconds) in the girls' race and Holtville's Edel Lopez was second in the boys' race (17:23) in Division IV.

In Division III Brawley's Marcos Torres finished sixth (16:29) in the boys' race.

All three earned first-team All San Diego Section honors and will advance to the state finals in Fresno on Saturday.

Brawley's Arturo Contreras took 13th (17:02) and Claudia Dominguez was 11th (17:47). They earned second-team San Diego Section honors. The Brawley boys finished fifth and the Brawley girls were sixth.

The Holtville girls took third and the boys were seventh in Division IV.

Central Union's Hipolito Valdez took 56th (18:29) overall and was the Spartans' top finisher. The Central boys finished 13th in Division III.

In Division II the Calexico boys were 19th and the girls 13th. Joana Garcia led the girls, taking 29th (18:34), while Mike Padilla led the boys, finishing 27th (17:25).
